The Foundation was started in 1994 by Hal and Lyn Dunham. They built their home in Falling Waters that year and discovered it was on land that had been surveyed by George Washington and once had been part of a plantation. Further research revealed that a plantation house on a section of the original property was the birthplace of a "famous artist," W. R. Leigh. Although both Hal and Lyn had an interest in art, neither was familiar with Leigh but soon learned he was famous, indeed, and ranked with Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, and Thomas Moran (the latter being a friend and neighbor of Leigh's in New York City.). A group of neighbors and friends organized around their interest in works by the artist and to save Maidstone from being torn down for a housing development. Martin and Seibert, Martinsburg, provided pro-bono legal advice; a friend, Lowell McAllister, Director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY provided expertise and encouragement about the worthiness of the endeavor; Douglas Frost of the Maryland Institute, where Leigh had studied, signaled its interest; John Cuthbert, Director of the West Virginia University Library emphasized Leigh's legacy of West Virginia paintings. Today, Maidstone is privately owned and the new owner is dedicated to restoring it. The foundation's focus has changed to provide information about Leigh to the public through educational programs, including this web site. The ultimate goal is to develop a Leigh exhibit in his hometown, Martinsburg, West Virginia. Board of Directors:
